First Birthday Family Photos in Watertown WI
There is something so fun about photographing a baby's first birthday. At this age, babies have so much personality. They are curious, active, and ready to explore everything around them.
For this Watertown, WI first birthday photography session, we started with family photos in the studio. We kept the setup simple with a white backdrop, couch, and chair. The clean setup gave us a classic look while also giving the kids plenty of room to move.
And move they did!
The kiddos were wild in the best possible way. Instead of trying to make everyone sit perfectly still, we leaned into their personalities. We captured plenty of candid family moments, which is honestly one of my favorite parts of photographing families with two young kids.

When you have two little ones, keeping everyone perfectly posed can feel impossible. Luckily, they do not need to sit still for every photograph.
In fact, some of my favorite family images happen when kids are moving, laughing, cuddling, or doing something completely unexpected.
That is exactly what happened during this session.
The kids brought so much energy into the studio. We let them interact, play, and be themselves. As a result, we captured genuine expressions and fun family moments that showed their personalities.
Those candid photographs often become the images parents love the most.
Sweet One Cake Smash for Baby Girl
After the family photos, we moved on to the birthday celebration.
This little girl's cake smash featured a classic "Sweet One" theme. We created a customized first birthday setup that gave her a fun space to explore her cake.
And she absolutely loved it!
She did not just sit in front of the cake and take a few tiny bites. She went all in. She smashed the cake, explored the frosting, and even crawled right through it a few times.
We were all laughing as we watched her discover the cake.
Cake smashes make such fun first birthday photographs because you never really know how a baby will react. Some babies love the cake immediately. Others feel unsure about the new textures. Some barely touch it.
